The most common nursing bra design is the standard U-shaped straps that you wear from the front. But racerback nursing bras are fast becoming the more popular option.
A nursing bra with a cross or racerback design is a great choice if you need more breast support and hate shoulder straps that fall off all the time.

Best racerback nursing bra overall: Cake Maternity Tutti Frutti Nursing Bra
Why I love the Tutti Frutti Nursing Bra
- It’s made of bamboo and is amazingly soft and breathable
- The racerback design and deep lace-trim neckline give my breasts a push up effect without feeling uncomfortable
- Has molded cups that protect from milk leaks and nipple show-through.
- It’s wireless but has a wide and supportive underbust band.
- Has 6 hook and eye options at the back
What I don’t like about it
- The side slings stretched out after a few washes and provided no support during breastfeeding
Bear in mind
- There is a busty version for moms with large breasts

Best racerback nursing bra for small breasts: BRAVADO! Designs Original Nursing Bra
Why I love the Original Nursing Bra
- it’s made of a super soft blend of cotton and modal
- the wide underbust band doesn’t dig in and is very comfy
- light-weight and breathable, perfect for warmer weather
- the wrap-style cups don’t overwhelm small breasts
What I don’t like about it
- There is no hook and eye option. Once it stretches out, that’s it for support.
Bear in mind
There are 2 Original Nursing Bra cup designs – one with a wrap-style neckline (pic above) and one with a full cup scooped V neckline (pic below) for more support and coverage. The racerback design is exactly the same.
Best racerback nursing bra for large breasts: Kindred Bravely Sublime Busty Nursing Sports Bra
Why I love the Sublime Busty Nursing Sports Bra
- has expanded fabric in the cups to cover large breasts better
- wide straps that don’t dig in and cut
- some of the colors don’t look like sports bras at all
- is actually supportive enough for large breasts
What I don’t like about it
- doesn’t have hook and eye options so once it stretches out, that’s it for support
Bear in mind
- It’s a nursing sports bra, and therefore, meant to fit snugly.
Best wireless racerback nursing bra: Cake Maternity Cotton Candy Nursing Bra
Why I love the Cotton Candy Nursing Bra
- has 6 hook and eye options for a better fit.
- the seamless SOFTEX microfiber material is amazingly soft and cooling
- Wireless and has double layers and structured panels for better support
- OEKO-TEX certified to be free from harmful chemicals
What I don’t like about it
- it’s not breathable – not ideal for hot and humid weather
Bear in mind
- it’s not supportive enough for moms with large breasts and also gives you uni-boob

Best flexi-wired racerback nursing bra: Cake Maternity Zest Nursing Sports Bra
Why I love the Zest Nursing Sports Bra
- It’s one of the most supportive nursing sports bra on the market
- Separates your breasts so you don’t have uni-boob and sweat less
- Moisture-wicking and breathable
- has flexi-wires to provide more support and lift
What I don’t like about it
- it’s not comfortable enough for all-day wear
Bear in mind
- It has shallow cups and is meant to fit snugly to prevent breast bounce
Best racerback sleep nursing bra: Kindred Bravely French Terry Sleep Bra
Why I love the French Terry Sleep Bra
- made of the softest bamboo fabric, perfect for a snuggly sleep
- no irritating hooks, snaps or seams
- breathable and absorbent – great for humid nights
- the pull-aside flaps make it very easy to breastfeed at night when you’re half asleep
What I don’t like about it
- it has a wrap-style front so moms with larger breasts will find their breasts falling out when they sleep on their side.
Bear in mind
- The length of the straps is fixed so if you have a short or long torso, it might not fit properly.
Best racerback pumping bra: Rumina Racerback Pumping Bra
Why I love the Rumina Racerback Pumping Bra
- made of soft and breathable cotton
- provides more breast support than the regular Rumina pumping bra.
- the multiple layers at the cups also protect from nipple show-through
- value-for-money
What I don’t like about it
- the straps stretch out over time
Bear in mind
The straps and under-bust band are not adjustable.
Best racerback nursing bralette:Cosa Bella Curvy Racie Bralette
Why I love the Curvy Racie Bralette
- one of the more supportive nursing bralettes around
- has wide straps that don’t dig in
- beautiful and feminine soft lace all over
- doesn’t look like a nursing bra at all
What I don’t like about it
- no hook and eye options
Bear in mind
- it’s only lightly lined. You’ll need to insert your own breast pads.
Best racerback nursing sports bra: Cake Maternity Lotus Pumping Bra
Why I love the Lotus Pumping Bra
- it’s the ultimate bra – nursing bra, pumping bra and sport bra-in-one
- provides great support for regular use and low impact sports
- thick sturdy material that doesn’t stretch out even over many months
- comfy and supportive enough to wear the whole day
What I don’t like about it
- It’s unpadded. Even though the material is thick, I still felt the need to insert breast pads. Then they move.
Bear in mind
- It’s a great pumping bra but the flaps are too tight-fitting to nurse comfortably
Check out my detailed Lotus Pumping Bra review. P/s: I’m still wearing the Lotus Bra as a regular sports bra.
Best budget racerback nursing bra: Vinfact 3-pack Nursing Sports Bra
Why I love the Vinfact Nursing Sports Bra
- amazing value-for-money
- convertible to regular U-shape straps
- comes with bra extenders
- the removable pads don’t move around during wear
What I don’t like about it
- the straps can dig in and cut
Bear in mind
- Sizes run small so size up if you are in between sizes
What to look out for when choosing a racerback nursing bra
- hook and eye options – it’s fine to buy nursing bras that are not adjustable but you must really make sure they fit well. Also buy better quality so they don’t stretch out as quickly.
- how high the cross is – take a look at your existing wardrobe and try to gauge if you can wear the bra with all the tops you already have.
- whether it is convertible – to get the best of both worlds, buy a nursing bra that you can switch between regular U-shape and crossback.
- other features that all good quality nursing bras should have.
Benefits of wearing racerback nursing bras
- provide much better breast and back support than regular U-shape bras
- your shoulder straps never fall off. Ever.
- easy pull-over wear
- has a wide under-bust band that covers back fat and side fat better
- gives better breast lift and can give your girls a push-up effect
Cons of racerback nursing bras
- difficult to wear if you have shoulder pain
- also not that great post-caesarean as you’ll need to stretch your torso and arms upwards to wear them.
- unless you want your bra to show, you can’t wear camis and strappy tops.
- many racerback nursing bras don’t come with hook and eye options
- tend to have more material than regular nursing bras – not ideal when the weather is warm and humid
To wrap up
A racerback nursing bra is an awesome option for the active mom. If you want the best of both worlds, choose a convertible nursing bra that allows you to cross the straps whenever you feel like it.
