How long do toddler backpacks last?

Claire is only 3 years old and she is on her second backpack. Her first one was still working well but we bought her a new one for her birthday. Don’t worry, we have plans for her old backpack. It won’t go to waste. If you buy a good quality toddler backpack, it will last your child throughout their toddler years. However, your child might get bored of their old backpack and ask for a new one as their interests change.

How many years do toddler backpacks last?

When you buy a backpack, you’re focused more on the features that it has. Does it have a side mesh pocket? Are there separate compartments? Does it look cute? But when the backpack tears after a few months, you realize how important it is to buy a durable backpack for your child, even if you think they will outgrow it within the year. A good quality toddler backpack doesn’t die. It will last your child throughout their toddler years and when they are done with it, you can even pass it down or donate it to someone else for a second life.

How do you know a backpack is durable?

Here are some features of good quality backpacks that increase the chances of your child’s backpack surviving their toddler years:

Made of strong, thick fabric

Even though natural fiber material like cotton might be more eco-friendly, when it comes to durability, strong polyester fabric wins any day. If you’re concerned about the environment, you can choose to buy recycled polyester backpacks. Fenrici Kids Backpacks are made of thick 900-denier recycled polyester: Fenrici Galaxy Kids Backpack for Girls, Boys, Teens, 16 in x 13.5 in, Recycled School Bag with Laptop Compartment (Galaxy Purple)

Water-resistance

A water-resistant or waterproof backpack will last longer as the material is always better quality than a regular one. Water-resistance also prevents moisture from getting inside the bag which will prevent mold. The Willikiva Zoo Backpack range are perfectly sized for toddlers, is water-resistant and weighs as much as 2 lemons:

Long-lasting zippers

When I see a YKK zipper, I know it will last. It’s sad that I know zipper brands but that’s because some zippers have broken down on me with only a few uses and having a zipper that snags is a pet peeve. In the old days, someone might patiently remove the broken zipper and replace it. Nowadays, that’s never going to happen. When you receive your backpack, test the zippers relentlessly. Your munchkin is going to be pulling on it multiple times in the day. If it doesn’t glide smoothly from the get go, return the backpack. It won’t last.

Washable backpacks

Kids are a dirty bunch. You’ll need to get them a backpack that is easy to clean and wash. Otherwise, it’s a matter of time before you’ll have to throw it away because it’s just too dirty to use. Check out my article on how to keep children’s backpacks clean.

Adjustable straps

I wasn’t going to mention this because all backpacks have adjustable straps nowadays. However, it’s critical to have straps that are long enough that you can adjust it out as your child grows.

Buy from reputable brands

Look for backpack brands that have been around for a long time and have good reviews on Amazon or other sites. Some brands like Skip Hop and Wildkin are established brands that make children backpacks that will last years. Skip Hop Toddler Backpack, Zoo Preschool Ages 2-4, Butterfly

Timeless design

Unfortunately this is a hard one to get right. Children are finicky at the best of times. They might be Spiderman’s biggest fan today and hate his guts tomorrow. But if you can find a backpack you think they will carry for a few years, you’ve got a winner.

To wrap up

A good quality toddler backpack will outlast your child’s preschool years and even be good enough to pass down to a younger sibling. Just try to buy one that your child won’t get bored of too soon.
