When Tommy started going to daycare at the tender age of 6 months, we bought him a backpack. We knew there was a list of things he needed to bring to daycare and a backpack was the best way to carry all that.
Obviously, even though it was ‘his backpack’, we were the ones carrying it.
Claire, on the other hand, at the grand old age of 3, proudly carries her own Bluey backpack.

When do kids start needing backpacks?
The biggest trigger for parents to start thinking about buying a backpack for their child is often daycare. When your child starts going to daycare or nursery, there are just so many things that need to be brought in. We have used tote bags and sling bags but found the easiest way was to chuck it all into a backpack that you or your bigger child can carry into daycare. Even if your child is too young to carry their own backpack, you will find it much easier to carry their backpack on your shoulders while you’re carrying them to and from your car.
Can infants wear backpacks?
If your child starts going to daycare before they start walking, you can still buy a cute kiddies backpack for all their daycare stuff. However, you’ll be doing the carrying, not them.
