Are toddler backpacks waterproof?

Due to peak hour pick-up traffic, we park on the road when picking Claire and Tommy up from daycare. This works out fine most times. But it’s a problem when it pours. By the time we get to the car, we are all drenched. And their bags and the contents within? Soaking wet. Unfortunately, most toddler backpacks are not waterproof. Even those that claim that they are may not actually be fully waterproof.

What is a waterproof backpack?

Silly question? I think not. When we buy a waterproof backpack, that means we can expect to fully submerge the whole bag under water for a prolonged period of time and it will still be dry inside. But most brands who label their backpacks waterproof only mean ‘water-resistant’.

What is a water-resistant backpack?

Water-resistant backpacks usually keep your toddler’s stuff dry in rain or if it was dropped briefly into a puddle of water. Water-resistant bags are typically coated to allow light rain, drizzle, and moisture to run off of the bag and away from your belongings. But if the bag gets submerged underwater, it will not be 100% waterproof. Not all backpacks are equally water-resistant either. Some protect their contents better than others.

Are toddler backpacks usually waterproof?

No, toddler backpacks are usually not waterproof. Waterproof fabric and zippers are expensive. Most parents (or maybe just me) wouldn’t spring for an expensive backpack for their child as they grow out of it so fast. But many toddler backpacks are water-resistant to an extent.

Is a waterproof toddler backpack worth it?

Waterproof or water-resistant backpacks are slightly more expensive than regular backpacks but tend to be lighter and more durable. Whether or not it’s worth it depends on what your toddler needs their backpack for. If it’s for a camping trip or for travelling, then by golly yes, it’s worth it! If it’s just for the occasional downpour, probably not. You’re better off using a temporary rain cover instead.

Benefits of waterproof toddler backpacks

Other than the obvious benefit of protecting your toddler’s precious contents from getting wet, waterproof backpacks have a few other benefits:
  • You don’t need to worry about a rain cover or big enough umbrella to protect both your toddler and their bag.
  • These backpacks are more durable as the material used is of better quality. Try getting your toddler to rip one. It’s impossible.
  • The seams are heat-sealed and therefore much tougher than regular stitch seams.
  • Waterproof material is lighter than other common backpack fabrics like cotton.
  • Your toddler is free to walk through as many puddles and mud holes as they want. No worries!
  • Peace of mind that your child’s backpack contents are safe from natural forces. If it rains all the time, just get a waterproof backpack. It’s worth it.
  • When it comes to durability, the benefits of waterproof backpacks are clear. Welded seams make them more durable than sewn ones and they will also be lighter on your child’s shoulders.

Whether they claim to be waterproof or water-resistant, all these backpacks are only water-resistant. Even though the material might be waterproof, the zippers and seams are not. You don’t have to worry about being caught in the rain briefly but don’t go swimming with them. You should also make sure the backpack size is appropriate for your toddler. Read how to measure them for the right bag size.

How do you know if your toddler’s backpack is waterproof?

Rather than blindly trusting the label, it’s good to know what to look out for in a waterproof backpack:
  • Check the zippers. They should be coated. If they are not, water will seep through.
  • Check the seams. If the seams are stitched and you can see holes in the fabric, the backpack is not really waterproof.
  • And the cincher? Put it in a pail of water to soak. for a while. If the inside of the backpack is still dry, it’s definitely waterproof.

How do you make your toddler’s backpack waterproof or water-resistant?

Make a waterproof backpack from scratch

For the creative moms and dads out there, this one is for you. Why pay through the nose for a substandard waterproof backpack when you can make your own? Unfortunately, my skills lie elsewhere so I’ll link to this ‘easy’ tutorial on how to make a waterproof bag.

Use a pack liner

Pack liners are easy to find in most outdoor gear shops and retail stores at low prices. They don’t really cost much but they help keep the contents of your backpack dry if they’re used properly. Just line the inside of your toddler’s backpack with it.

Heavy-duty garbage bag

Want a dirt-cheap option? You can use large plastic bags instead of pack liners. Put all your toddler’s stuff into a thick plastic bag and put the whole thing into their backpack. Just make sure that the neck of the bag is tight and secure to prevent water getting in that way.

Spray on a water-repellent and apply seam sealer

You can buy both at an outdoor store. Before spraying, make sure the backpack is clean and completely dry. Use a seam-sealing spray on the seams and zippers. All done! Admittedly, I’m not a fan of this method as I don’t want to expose Claire and Tommy to harsh chemicals unnecessarily.

Backpack rain cover

This is probably my favorite way of waterproofing a backpack! Rain covers are not fully protective as they don’t cover the area behind your toddler’s shoulders and back. However, for the short amount of time they will be in the rain, rain covers are perfectly adequate. The only inconvenience is to actually have to put it on.

To wrap up

Waterproof toddler backpacks are more expensive than regular ones for good reason. Most toddler backpacks are only water-resistant, even those who claim that they are waterproof. But a good quality water-resistant backpack is more than enough for everyday use.
