Motherhood Maternity Plus Size Seamless Nursing Bra Review: A deep dive
Who was the tester?
I’m a first time mom who was a size 40D pre-pregnancy. At the time of review, I was in the first few months of nursing and had grown to a size 44DDD. It was a rare day that I didn’t have some ache or other and my breasts were still getting engorged on a semi-regular basis.
I reviewed the Motherhood Maternity Plus Size Seamless Nursing Bra in black mélange (grey marle), size 2X.
The main criteria I assessed when reviewing this bra were comfort, support, ease of use, sexiness (style factor) and value-for-money as these are what most moms look for in a nursing bra.
Disclaimer: I bought the bra for review purposes and have since returned it.
An introduction to the Motherhood Maternity Plus Size Seamless Nursing Bra
The bra was a seamless, wireless clip-down nursing bra that was specifically designed for women with large breasts. It had thinly padded, full coverage cups to provide light support.
The Motherhood Maternity Plus Size Seamless Nursing Bra was designed with the sole intention of providing comfort during the last trimester of pregnancy and the first months of breastfeeding. In this regard, it didn’t disappoint. Anyone who has lounged around in sweatshirts and track pants will understand the homely comfort this bra gives to achy new moms.
The bra comes in 7 colours:
- Orchid bouquet (lilac – pictured above)
- Black mélange (grey marle)
- Milk (cinnamon)
- Winter sky (powder blue)
And in sizes 1X-3X , catering to women with band sizes 40-46 and cup sizes D-G. There’s a handy size chart on Amazon that tells you what bra size to buy.
Who is it best suited for?
Breastfeeding moms with large breasts needing a comfy bra for hospital or home wear and sleep. By virtue of its softness and flexibility, it is particularly suited for new moms who are still trying to establish and maintain milk supply.
Who is it not for?
It’s only meant for light support and therefore not suitable to be worn for any kind of exercise. It’s best used as a lounging or sleep bra. I wore it out for light errands but some moms felt there wasn’t enough support to wear out at all.
Was the Motherhood Maternity Plus Size Seamless Nursing Bra comfortable?
By golly yes! I didn’t have any complaints in the comfort department. It gave me a comfy homey feeling and I was entirely satisfied wearing it around the house.
There were no wires digging into my ribs and no seams to irritate my engorged breasts. The fabric was very stretchy and accommodated my wild fluctuations in breast size. The bra sat flat and there was not pinching or puckered skin. It almost felt like I wasn’t wearing anything at all!
I was also pleasantly surprised that even though it was made from synthetic material (90%nylon and 10% spandex), the fabric was cool on my skin and wasn’t sweaty.
In short, this bra is so comfy that you can wear it 24/7.
Did the Motherhood Maternity Plus Size Seamless Nursing Bra provide good support?
The bra was definitely supportive enough to wear around the house. I wore it out on short trips and thought that it was fine but there wasn’t enough support to wear for any kind of exercises, even low-impact ones like walking.
Some moms felt uncomfortable wearing this bra out at all citing lack of support so I guess it boils down to how much support you like and probably also how big your boobs are.
The shoulder straps were sturdy and didn’t dig into my shoulders even after hours of use.
The back band can be quite snug but the bra came with free bra extenders so you can adjust it as needed to get the perfect fit. I also loved that the band didn’t roll or bunch.
I had a love-hate relationship with the lined cups. The pads protected my nipples from showing through (too much) and gave my boobs some shape. It would be useful to catch milk leaks as well. However, the pads need adjusting sometimes which can be annoying.
Was the Motherhood Maternity Plus Size Seamless Nursing Bra easy to use?
The clip-down cups were easy to maneuver with one hand. Even though they were padded, the lining was thin and therefore easily folded and unfolded without leaving a post-feeding crease. However, the pads were removable and therefore could move quite easily and got displaced during wear. Two easy options that I can see here – you could sew the pads in place or remove them altogether.
The company also recommends that the bras be hand-washed. Who has time for that? But many moms have machine-washed their bras in a garment bag on a delicate cycle and found their bras held up well.
Was the Motherhood Maternity Plus Size Seamless Nursing Bra sexy (stylish)?
Even though the bra comes in many nice colors (other than the usual black and nude), I probably wouldn’t go so far as to call it sexy.
The full cups sat high so I couldn’t wear it with low cut tops or v-necks. On the other hand, my boobs didn’t fall out when I bent over!
The cups were lightly lined but by no means contoured. It prevented uni-boob to some extent but didn’t lift or separate my boobs.
Was the Motherhood Maternity Plus Size Seamless Nursing Bra good value-for-money?
It was affordably priced and if you’re purely looking for a comfortable bra, worth every penny for the coziness it provides when your boobs are sore and your back aches.
What was not so good about the Motherhood Maternity Plus Size Seamless Nursing Bra?
While the black mélange bra was made of good quality material and true-to-size, so many moms have complained of discrepancies in sizes and quality of fabric between the various colors that its worth mentioning. One way to protect yourself is to make sure you can return the bra if it doesn’t fit just right or if the quality is off.
The removable pads could also be a hassle as they got displaced sometimes and needed to be adjusted. If I were to use this bra regularly, I would remove the pads. You sacrifice nipple show-through but since you’ll mostly be wearing this bra at home anyway, it doesn’t matter. The other option is to sew the pads in place so they stop moving about.
To wrap up
If you’re looking for a comfortable bra and a good price, this is the bra for you.
I would recommend the Motherhood Maternity Plus Size Seamless Nursing Bra to new moms with large breasts needing a comfy bra for hospital or home wear and sleep. In the first few months of breastfeeding, comfort is the most important thing and this bra certainly delivers on that.
