Do you wear a hands-free pumping bra all day?

Do you want to wear a hands-free pumping bra all day? I didn’t with my first baby. I would change into a pumping bra for pumping sessions and wear a regular nursing bra the rest of the time.

I got a lot more savvy with my second baby. And because I went back to work part-time when he was only 2 months old, I pumped a lot more. So most days, I wear a hands-free pumping bra throughout the day.

The idea of wearing a pumping bra all day sounds like it would be an uncomfortable experience but it is not if you choose the right hands-free pumping bra. Pumping bras that are soft, wireless and allow you to breastfeed at the same time do double duty as a nursing bra and can be worn all day and night.

Let’s take a deep dive:

Do you wear a hands-free pumping bra all day?

I regularly wore my pumping bra throughout the day when I was breastfeeding my second baby. I talk about it more in my article about the Lotus Pumping Bra.

You can wear a hands-free pumping bra all day if it is comfortable and not too tight. If you are pumping and breastfeeding as well, your pumping bra should also allow you to nurse at the same time.

The Momcozy Pumping Bra allows you to breastfeed at the same time:

Don’t get me wrong. A pumping bra needs to be tight enough to hold the flanges securely while you are pumping. But it shouldn’t be so tight that it causes you discomfort or pain.

A tight or ill-fitting bra, regardless of whether it is a pumping bra, nursing bra or regular bra, can cause clogged milk ducts or decrease milk supply if you wear it all day.

Types of pumping bras

There are many different types of pumping bras, and some are actually pretty uncomfortable to wear. In fact, some pumping bras can only be worn for pumping.

This can be a big pain in the you-know-where when you have to switch bras every few hours.

There are mainly 3 types of pumping bras, and only one type that I would recommend wearing all day:

Wireless dual function pumping bras

These bras allow you to pump and nurse at the same time. And because they are wireless, you can start wearing them from day 1 post-partum, even when your breasts are still fluctuating in size. You can definitely wear wireless pumping bras throughout the day.

The Kindred Bravely Pumping Bra is a great choice for any mom:

Flexi-wired dual function pumping bras

These underwired bras also allow you to pump and nurse at the same time. The underwire provides more breast support but can increase your risk of clogged ducts. If you are a new mom, don’t wear underwired bras until at least 6-8 weeks of stable breastfeeding. Even for seasoned breastfeeders, I’m still not keen on flexi-wired pumping bras.

The only flexi-wired pumping bra I would recommend is the Dairy Fairy Ayla Pumping Bra. Other than looking very pretty, it has a demi-wire instead of a full flexi-wire. This reduces your risk of clogged ducts.

Pumping corsets

Pumping corsets should only be worn during pumping. Unless you are not breastfeeding and like feeling restricted. Just joking, you CANNOT wear pumping corset throughout the day.

Do you wear your pumping bra all day at work?

When I went back to work, my breasts got engorged so often because I was always running late for my pumping sessions. I also multi-tasked throughout pumping so I could still make it home on time.

This was when my hands-free pumping bra came into its own. Because I had a comfortable and supportive dual-function pumping bra, I could wear it throughout my work day.

I saved precious time by not having to change in and out of pumping corsets. I could even breastfeed my baby just before I left for work and the moment I got home without having to change out of my pumping bra.

These are the best pumping bras I recommend for work.

Can you wear a pumping bra as a regular bra?

All dual-function pumping bras allow you to breastfeed at the same time. It’s amazing how quickly pumping bras have evolved from the prehistoric pumping corsets.

As long as your pumping bra fits well and is supportive enough, you can wear it all day as a regular nursing bra for breastfeeding.

In fact, if you chose a nice looking pumping bra, you can even wear it as a regular bra when you’re done and dusted with breastfeeding. No one will know unlesss you tell them.

I still wear the Lotus Pumping Bra for yoga and no one knows it’s a pumping bra:

To wrap up

You can wear a wireless hands-free pumping bra all day. In fact, I highly recommend it. That way, you can save money by not having to buy as many nursing and pumping bras.
